Nestled amid the natural beauty of Ban Ta Khun District, Surat Thani Province, the Ban Chiew Larn Arts and Crafts Centre is both a living museum of traditional weaving and a vibrant community enterprise. Established under the royal initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, the centre was created to provide sustainable livelihoods for local residents affected by the construction of the Ratchaprapha Dam decades ago.

The story began in 1999, when community leaders from Ban Kraisorn—who had relocated to Ban Chiew Larn after the dam’s construction—had the honour of meeting Her Majesty. Upon hearing their request for supplementary income opportunities, Her Majesty graciously granted a weaving project, complete with a building and weaving equipment, which began operations in 2000.

Since then, the centre has flourished, producing exquisite handwoven fabrics renowned for their intricate patterns and exceptional craftsmanship. Recognised as a distinguished OTOP product of Surat Thani, these textiles can be tailored into garments for both traditional and modern occasions, showcasing the perfect blend of heritage and contemporary style.

Beyond production, the centre serves as an educational hub, welcoming visitors and study groups to observe demonstrations and learn weaving techniques from skilled local artisans. It also continues to honour the vision of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya under the concept “Thai Fabrics in Fun Fashion”. The centre has proudly received the royal pattern design, “Khon Chao Fa Sirivannavari Mudmee”, which will be developed into a distinctive community fabric in the future.
A visit to the Ban Chiew Larn Arts and Crafts Centre is more than a shopping experience—it is a journey into the heart of Thai heritage, resilience, and creativity. Here, every thread tells a story of dedication, cultural pride, and sustainable community development.
