Birdwatching at Krung Ching draws attention to the different layers of the rainforest, from shaded streams to branches high overhead. This three-day visit brought Roger & Freda to Khao Luang National Park for guided observation by day and after dark.
Khao Sok Travel arranged this three-day, two-night birdwatching expedition in the Krung Ching area of Khao Luang National Park. The account follows the habitats explored, the birds recorded and the field methods used over two full days of birding. Khao Luang National Park (Krung Ching)
With Khao Sok Travel – The Legendary Khao Sok Travel.
We were honored to host Roger & Freda on a dedicated 3-Day Birdwatching Program at Khao Luang National Park – Krung Ching, one of Southern Thailand’s richest lowland evergreen forest ecosystems and a true haven for serious birders.
Khao Luang's primary rainforest includes a tall canopy, riverine habitats and intact forest corridors that support resident and migratory birds. Over two full days of guided birding, the programme combined early-morning, afternoon and specialised night sessions. Observation focused on the habitats birds use, with tracking techniques adapted to the species being sought.
Notable Highlights from the Trip
Green Broadbill – Observed at the forest's mid-level, this canopy bird showed emerald plumage and subtle barring on the wings.
Asian Paradise Flycatcher (male) – A white-morph bird was recorded along shaded stream corridors, with its long tail streamers clearly visible.
Blue-winged Pitta – Spotted near freshwater habitat, this colourful forest bird is often heard before it is seen.
Other forest passerines and understory specialists were also recorded as part of the trip's structured checklist.
The field approach brought together the following practices:
Quiet entry into the forest at first light.
Recognising target calls and using a response strategy.
Waiting at river edges and fruiting trees to observe birds.
Ethical birding practices intended to keep disturbance to a minimum.
Night birding added another period of observation, with opportunities to look for nocturnal species and document the forest soundscape.
