Khao Luang National Park (Krung Ching)
With Khao Sok Travel – The Legendary Khao Sok Travel
We were honored to host Roger & Freda on a dedicated 3-Day Birdwatching Program at Khao Luang National Park – Krung Ching, one of Southern Thailand’s richest lowland evergreen forest ecosystems and a true haven for serious birders.
Khao Luang’s primary rainforest, with its towering canopy, riverine habitats, and intact forest corridors, provides ideal conditions for both resident and migratory species. Over two intensive full days of guided birding — early morning, afternoon, and specialized night sessions — we focused on habitat-based observation and species-specific tracking techniques.
Notable Highlights from the Trip
🔹 Green Broadbill – A dazzling canopy specialist, observed at mid-level forest strata, displaying its characteristic emerald plumage and subtle wing barring.
🔹 Asian Paradise Flycatcher (male) – Elegant white morph recorded along shaded stream corridors, showcasing its extraordinary elongated tail streamers.
🔹 Blue-winged Pitta – Spotted near freshwater habitat, a vibrant forest jewel often heard before seen.
🔹 Multiple forest passerines and understory specialists recorded during structured checklist documentation.
Our approach emphasizes:
• Silent forest entry at first light
• Targeted call recognition and response strategy
• River-edge and fruiting tree stakeouts
• Ethical birding practice with minimal disturbance
Night birding sessions added further depth to the experience, expanding opportunities for nocturnal species and forest soundscape documentation.
