These birds display a rich brownish color with complex markings of black, white, and blue-gray. Male Features: The male has elongated tail feathers and vivid ocelli (eye spots) on its wings used during courtship displays to attract females. Female Features: Females are smaller and less ornate, with shorter tails and more subdued coloration, making them well camouflaged in the forest. Habitat The Great Argus inhabits the dense lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Khao Sok National Park. It prefers areas with thick undergrowth where it can forage for food and engage in courtship displays. Location in Khao Sok: Found in the deep forests, often near trails or undisturbed areas. • The Asian Forest Scorpion | Khao Sok Travel

INSECTS & ANIMALS The Asian Forest Scorpion A species of scorpion commonly found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Thailand. These scorpions are known for their large size, with adults typically reaching up to 10-12 cm in length. Their bodies are robust and dark, usually black or dark brown, which helps them blend into the forest floor where they often hide under logs, rocks, or leaf litter during the day. Despite their intimidating appearance, Asian Forest Scorpions are not highly venomous. Their sting is painful but usually not dangerous to humans, similar to a bee sting. They rely more on their strong pincers (pedipalps) to capture and subdue prey, which includes insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. These scorpions are nocturnal and come out at night to hunt. They are solitary creatures, and their diet consists mainly of insects and small invertebrates. In the wild, they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations. Asian Forest Scorpions are sometimes kept as exotic pets, but they require specific environmental conditions that mimic their natural habitat, such as high humidity and plenty of hiding spots. While they are not typically aggressive, they will defend themselves if threatened. In Khao Sok National Park, visitors might encounter these fascinating creatures during night hikes, offering a glimpse into the nocturnal world of the rainforest. Previous Next

Khao Sok National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to a fascinating array of wildlife, including the remarkable flying lizards. These unique reptiles, known scientifically as Draco, are a wonder of the animal kingdom, captivating visitors with their extraordinary ability to glide between trees. The Fascinating Flying Lizards: Species: The most commonly encountered flying lizard in Khao Sok is the Draco volans, often referred to as the common flying dragon. These lizards are small, typically around 20-25 centimeters in length, including their long, slender tail. • Tapir of Khao Sok | Khao Sok Travel

INSECTS & ANIMALS Tapir of Khao Sok This image was captured by a wildlife camera trap set up by patrol officers at Khao Sok National Park. The camera captured a tapir near a water source and food area for wildlife in the region. What animal has a face like a pig, feet like a rhino, a nose like an elephant’s trunk, and a short tail like a bear? An animal with such a unique appearance can only be the ‘tapir.’ The tapir, or Malayan tapir, scientifically known as Tapirus indicus, is a large herbivorous mammal. It typically measures about 2 meters in length, stands 1 meter tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 150-300 kilograms. Its short coat ranges in color from brown to nearly black, except for the Malayan tapir, which has a distinctive white band around its midsection, and the mountain tapir, which has a longer coat. All tapir species have oval-shaped ears with rounded tips and a white edge, a drooping, plump rear, and a short, thick tail. The front legs have four toes, and the back legs have three, allowing them to walk on mud or soft ground. Baby tapirs have striped or spotted fur for camouflage. Females have a single pair of teats. Tapirs are solitary or pair-living animals that forage in dense, moist forests, often near water sources. They use their long, trunk-like noses to help smell and grasp leaves from bushes for food, and they can eat certain toxic plants. Tapirs enjoy wallowing in water or mud, are nocturnal, and have poor eyesight, relying on their trunk to smell their way around. Newborn tapirs are born with stripes resembling watermelon patterns, much like wild boar piglets. Thanks to the information from: Sueb Nakhasathien Foundation and Thai Wildlife Database website. • The mantis, or praying mantis | Khao Sok Travel

INSECTS & ANIMALS The mantis, or praying mantis belongs to the order Mantodea. It is easily recognizable by its elongated body, triangular head, and prominent, raptorial forelegs that are adapted for capturing and holding prey. These insects are highly skilled predators, often known for their stealthy hunting techniques. Their large, compound eyes can rotate nearly 180 degrees, giving them a wide field of vision, which is crucial for detecting prey and potential threats. The height inside the cave also changes frequently, with some sections having high ceilings of up to 20 meters, while others are lower, requiring visitors to crouch or wade through waist-deep water. The width of the cave ranges from wide open areas to narrow passages where only one person can pass at a time. The cave's terrain is uneven, with rocky surfaces and water channels, making it a challenging yet rewarding experience for adventurers. Interior Features: The interior of Nam Talu Cave is characterized by its unique combination of water and rock formations. The cave is essentially a natural tunnel carved out by the constant flow of water over thousands of years. As you enter the cave, you’ll find yourself walking through shallow streams, but as you go deeper, the water levels rise, and you may need to swim or wade through sections of the cave. The walls of the cave are adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, formed from mineral deposits carried by the water over centuries. If it is the flowering season, we can take you by car to the park, and guide you through the jungle for about 5-10km, in search of these wonderful flowers! About Rafflesia Rafflesia is a parasitic plant with no leaves or roots on its own. It invades the liana vines and like a parasite, it absorbs all the vine's nutrients.Once a year small buds begin to develop beneath the root bark of the vine. As they mature, they swell, breaking through the bark, to the size of a football. They then burst open revealing the massive flower, which can be up to 80 cm. in diameter and is ocra, yellow, chesnut and white in colour. Flies pollinate Bua Phut, attracted by the sweet, slicky smell. A female flower is polinated oly by a male flower, and chances are reduced, not only by its rarity, but also because it only flowers for 3-4 days, then it shrivels and dies. Rafflesia is found in only countries on the Sunda shelf, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. It get its name from Sir Stanford Raffles, who first found specimens of another species in Sabah, East Malaysia.
