DESCRIPTION : The Rafflesia, (in Thai : bua phut) is the biggest flower in the world! And can be found in Khao Sok! When it blossoms, it measures 80cm in diameter. The flower only lasts 5 days. The flowers grows only when it’s raining during a couple of days. The flower has no roots or leaves of its own. There are many different areas where we can find this flower in the park. If it is the flowering season, we can take you by car to the park, and guide you through the jungle for about 5-10km, in search of these wonderful flowers! About Rafflesia Rafflesia is a parasitic plant with no leaves or roots on its own. It invades the liana vines and like a parasite, it absorbs all the vine's nutrients.Once a year small buds begin to develop beneath the root bark of the vine. As they mature, they swell, breaking through the bark, to the size of a football. They then burst open revealing the massive flower, which can be up to 80 cm. in diameter and is ocra, yellow, chesnut and white in colour. Flies pollinate Bua Phut, attracted by the sweet, slicky smell. A female flower is polinated oly by a male flower, and chances are reduced, not only by its rarity, but also because it only flowers for 3-4 days, then it shrivels and dies. Rafflesia is found in only countries on the Sunda shelf, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. It get its name from Sir Stanford Raffles, who first found specimens of another species in Sabah, East Malaysia. These beliefs are passed down through generations, intertwining their daily lives with spiritual practices that honor and respect the natural world. Belief in Sacred Spirits Local communities hold a strong belief in "Phi Thaen" (ผีแถน) and forest spirits (ผีป่า) who are believed to protect both people and the forest. Festivals and Ceremonies Several cultural and religious events occur throughout the year, providing a glimpse into the traditional way of life: Songkran Festival (Water Festival) : During the Thai New Year in April, villagers celebrate by making offerings to monks, paying respect to elders, and participating in water blessings for good fortune and prosperity. Loy Krathong Festival : Held in November, this festival involves floating small decorated baskets (krathongs) on rivers or lakes, symbolizing letting go of past sins and asking the water spirits for blessings. Local Harvest Festivals : Many villagers engage in rice farming and fruit cultivation, with seasonal festivals marking the end of a successful harvest. Offerings are made to the land spirits in gratitude. The Role of Elders and Storytelling Elders in the community are highly respected as they pass down knowledge about nature, survival, and spiritual practices. - Gibbons | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS Gibbons Khao Sok National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and among the most fascinating and charismatic inhabitants are the gibbons. These agile primates are known for their impressive acrobatics, melodious calls, and critical role in the park’s ecosystem Species: The most commonly found gibbon species in Khao Sok is the White-handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar). They are easily recognized by their long arms, which they use to brachiate (swing) through the trees with incredible speed and agility. White-handed Gibbons have a distinctive white ring of fur around their faces and white fur on their hands and feet, contrasting with their otherwise dark fur. Behavior: Gibbons are highly territorial and monogamous, typically living in small family groups consisting of a mating pair and their offspring. They are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day, particularly in the early morning when their calls can be heard echoing through the forest. These calls serve as a way to mark territory and communicate with other gibbons. Habitat: Gibbons in Khao Sok National Park are primarily found in the park’s dense, primary rainforest. They prefer the upper canopy, where they can move freely from tree to tree. Their diet mainly consists of fruits, leaves, and insects, which are abundant in the rich biodiversity of the park’s forests. Conservation Status: The White-handed Gibbon is classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), mainly due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by deforestation. Khao Sok National Park plays a crucial role in the conservation of these gibbons by providing a protected environment where they can thrive. However, continued efforts are needed to ensure their long-term survival. Best Time to See Gibbons: The best time to spot or hear gibbons in Khao Sok National Park is early in the morning, shortly after sunrise. This is when they are most vocal and active, often seen swinging through the trees in search of food. Guided treks in the park often focus on these early hours to increase the chances of encountering these elusive primates. Gibbon Calls: One of the most enchanting experiences in Khao Sok is listening to the calls of the gibbons. Their songs can travel for up to two kilometers through the dense forest. These vocalizations are not only a beautiful part of the forest's soundscape but also an important communication tool for gibbons, helping them maintain territories and strengthen bonds within their family groups. Conservation Efforts: Khao Sok National Park is involved in various conservation efforts to protect gibbons and their habitat. These include anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and environmental education programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of preserving these unique primates and their environment. Visitor Experience: Visitors to Khao Sok National Park can join guided jungle treks that focus on wildlife spotting, including gibbons. The experience of watching gibbons in their natural habitat, swinging effortlessly through the treetops and hearing their calls, is truly unforgettable and highlights the rich biodiversity that makes Khao Sok a special place. Conclusion: Gibbons are a vital part of Khao Sok National Park’s ecosystem, offering visitors a glimpse into the complex and beautiful world of the rainforest. Protecting these incredible primates and their habitat is essential for preserving the natural heritage of Thailand and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the sights and sounds of these magnificent creatures. These unique reptiles, known scientifically as Draco, are a wonder of the animal kingdom, captivating visitors with their extraordinary ability to glide between trees. The Fascinating Flying Lizards: Species: The most commonly encountered flying lizard in Khao Sok is the Draco volans, often referred to as the common flying dragon. These lizards are small, typically around 20-25 centimeters in length, including their long, slender tail. Behavior: These lizards are diurnal and spend most of their time high in the trees. They are insectivores, feeding primarily on ants, termites, and small insects. They use their gliding ability to move efficiently through the forest in search of food and to escape predators.
