The flowers grows only when it’s raining during a couple of days. The flower has no roots or leaves of its own. There are many different areas where we can find this flower in the park. If it is the flowering season, we can take you by car to the park, and guide you through the jungle for about 5-10km, in search of these wonderful flowers! About Rafflesia Rafflesia is a parasitic plant with no leaves or roots on its own. It invades the liana vines and like a parasite, it absorbs all the vine's nutrients.Once a year small buds begin to develop beneath the root bark of the vine. As they mature, they swell, breaking through the bark, to the size of a football. They then burst open revealing the massive flower, which can be up to 80 cm. in diameter and is ocra, yellow, chesnut and white in colour. Flies pollinate Bua Phut, attracted by the sweet, slicky smell. A female flower is polinated oly by a male flower, and chances are reduced, not only by its rarity, but also because it only flowers for 3-4 days, then it shrivels and dies. Rafflesia is found in only countries on the Sunda shelf, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. It get its name from Sir Stanford Raffles, who first found specimens of another species in Sabah, East Malaysia. Khao Sok National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to a fascinating array of wildlife, including the remarkable flying lizards. These unique reptiles, known scientifically as Draco, are a wonder of the animal kingdom, captivating visitors with their extraordinary ability to glide between trees. The Fascinating Flying Lizards: Species: The most commonly encountered flying lizard in Khao Sok is the Draco volans, often referred to as the common flying dragon. These lizards are small, typically around 20-25 centimeters in length, including their long, slender tail. Appearance: Flying lizards have a distinctive appearance, with elongated ribs that support flaps of skin on either side of their body. When extended, these flaps form wing-like structures that allow the lizard to glide. Their coloration usually blends in with the forest, featuring shades of brown, green, and gray, with patterns that provide excellent camouflage. Gliding Ability: Flight Mechanism: Flying lizards don’t truly fly like birds; instead, they glide from tree to tree using their "wings." By spreading their ribs and skin flaps, they can launch themselves from a high point and glide for distances of up to 10 meters or more, steering with their tail and landing with precision on another tree trunk. Behavior: These lizards are diurnal and spend most of their time high in the trees. They are insectivores, feeding primarily on ants, termites, and small insects. They use their gliding ability to move efficiently through the forest in search of food and to escape predators. Habitat and Conservation: Habitat: Flying lizards thrive in the dense, humid rainforests of Khao Sok, where the tall trees and rich biodiversity provide an ideal environment. The forest’s complex structure offers the perfect setting for these lizards to exhibit their gliding skills. Conservation: While flying lizards are not currently considered endangered, their habitat is crucial for their survival. Khao Sok National Park plays a vital role in protecting these unique creatures by preserving the rainforest ecosystem they depend on. An Unforgettable Encounter: Spotting a flying lizard in Khao Sok is a thrilling experience. As you explore the forest, keep an eye on the tree trunks and branches above—if you’re lucky, you might witness one of these fascinating reptiles launching into the air, gliding gracefully to its next perch. Whether you’re trekking through the jungle or enjoying a peaceful boat ride, the chance to see a flying lizard in its natural habitat adds an extra layer of excitement to your visit. Come to Khao Sok National Park and discover the wonders of its flying lizards, where nature’s ingenuity is on full display in one of Thailand’s most beautiful and biodiverse landscapes. Previous Next

- The Asian Forest Scorpion | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS The Asian Forest Scorpion A species of scorpion commonly found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Thailand. These scorpions are known for their large size, with adults typically reaching up to 10-12 cm in length. Their bodies are robust and dark, usually black or dark brown, which helps them blend into the forest floor where they often hide under logs, rocks, or leaf litter during the day. Despite their intimidating appearance, Asian Forest Scorpions are not highly venomous. Their sting is painful but usually not dangerous to humans, similar to a bee sting. They rely more on their strong pincers (pedipalps) to capture and subdue prey, which includes insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. These scorpions are nocturnal and come out at night to hunt. They are solitary creatures, and their diet consists mainly of insects and small invertebrates. In the wild, they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations. Asian Forest Scorpions are sometimes kept as exotic pets, but they require specific environmental conditions that mimic their natural habitat, such as high humidity and plenty of hiding spots. - Tapir of Khao Sok | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS Tapir of Khao Sok This image was captured by a wildlife camera trap set up by patrol officers at Khao Sok National Park. The camera captured a tapir near a water source and food area for wildlife in the region. What animal has a face like a pig, feet like a rhino, a nose like an elephant’s trunk, and a short tail like a bear? An animal with such a unique appearance can only be the ‘tapir.’ The tapir, or Malayan tapir, scientifically known as Tapirus indicus, is a large herbivorous mammal. It typically measures about 2 meters in length, stands 1 meter tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 150-300 kilograms. Its short coat ranges in color from brown to nearly black, except for the Malayan tapir, which has a distinctive white band around its midsection, and the mountain tapir, which has a longer coat. All tapir species have oval-shaped ears with rounded tips and a white edge, a drooping, plump rear, and a short, thick tail. The front legs have four toes, and the back legs have three, allowing them to walk on mud or soft ground. Baby tapirs have striped or spotted fur for camouflage. Females have a single pair of teats. Tapirs are solitary or pair-living animals that forage in dense, moist forests, often near water sources. They use their long, trunk-like noses to help smell and grasp leaves from bushes for food, and they can eat certain toxic plants. Tapirs enjoy wallowing in water or mud, are nocturnal, and have poor eyesight, relying on their trunk to smell their way around. Newborn tapirs are born with stripes resembling watermelon patterns, much like wild boar piglets. Thanks to the information from: Sueb Nakhasathien Foundation and Thai Wildlife Database website. - Forests and Plants of Khao Sok National Park | Explore Thailand's Rich Biodiversity
FORESTS AND PLANT SPECIES Chicken Star Mushroom / Glow-in-the-Dark Mushroom Chicken Star Mushroom, also known as the Glow-in-the-Dark Mushroom, emits light in the dark. This rare phenomenon occurs in select areas, including Khao Sok National Park, thriving in its humid, biodiverse environment. General Characteristics Scientific Name: Mycena chlorophos . This species is one of the bioluminescent mushrooms, which naturally produce light due to the presence of luciferin. When luciferin reacts with oxygen in the environment, it produces a faint greenish glow. Size and Shape: Bioluminescent mushrooms are typically small, with cap sizes around 1-2 centimeters. They usually grow in clusters, with slender, elongated stems. Bioluminescence: These mushrooms emit a soft green glow in the dark, which attracts insects and small animals that help in the dispersal of spores. Habitat Bioluminescent mushrooms are commonly found in humid, evergreen forests. They often grow on decaying wood or in soil rich in decomposing organic matter. In Thailand, these glow-in-the-dark mushrooms can be found in certain areas of Khao Sok National Park, which is known for its rich biodiversity. Ecological Role Bioluminescent mushrooms play a vital role as decomposers in the ecosystem. They help break down organic material in the forest, facilitating the recycling of nutrients in the soil. Additionally, the light they emit may attract insects and small animals, aiding in the dispersion of their spores. Significance and Conservation The glow-in-the-dark mushroom is of significant interest to both tourists and scientists due to its rarity and unique bioluminescent property. Conservation of the humid evergreen forests where these mushrooms thrive is crucial to maintaining Thailand's rich biodiversity. Research and observations conducted in Khao Sok National Park provide valuable insights into the role and importance of bioluminescent mushrooms within the ecosystem.
