FORESTS AND PLANTS Rafflesia in Khao Sok The World’s Largest Flower Rafflesia, known locally as Bua Phut (wild lotus), is orange/red in appearance. It has no roots or leaves of its own; instead it lives parasitically inside the roots of the liana. It takes nine months to grow from the size of a small button to a giant football (some reach 80cm in diameter). The Rafflesia only blooms for a few days a year, usually during January and February. Botanical Characteristics: Rafflesia kerrii is a flowering plant that lacks the usual structures like leaves, stems, or roots. Instead, it consists of a large flower that is red or orange in color, with white mottled patterns on the petal edges. The flower has a diameter of about 50-90 centimeters and can weigh up to 10 kilograms. Rafflesia kerrii is a parasitic plant that relies on nutrients from the vines of the Tetrastigma plant by forming a network of haustoria (parasitic roots) that penetrate the host plant's vascular system. Pollination: Rafflesia kerrii uses a scent similar to rotting flesh to attract flies, which act as pollinators. These flies enter the central part of the flower in search of food, and as they move around inside the flower, they collect pollen from the male flower and transfer it to the female flower. Blooming Season: Rafflesia kerrii typically blooms during the winter season, from November to February, when the weather is cool and humid, ideal for the growth of this flower. Is a medium-sized monkey species found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including the Khao Sok forest in Surat Thani Province, Thailand. General Characteristics: Distinctive Features: The Spectacled Langur has a unique appearance with white fur around its eyes, resembling spectacles, which is the origin of its name. Fur: Its fur is generally dark gray or black, with white fur around the mouth and on the belly. Size: An adult Spectacled Langur typically measures about 50-70 centimeters in body length, with a tail that extends about 70-100 centimeters. Weight: An adult weighs approximately 6-7 kilograms. Behavior and Habitat: Behavior: Spectacled Langurs are social animals, usually found in groups ranging from 5 to 20 individuals. They are herbivores, primarily feeding on leaves, shoots, fruits, and flowers. Habitat: They typically inhabit dense forests or deciduous forests with a rich variety of vegetation. Reached on foot from the southwestern shore of Chiaw Lan Lake, Tham Nam Thalu contains striking limestone formations and subterranean streams. Mushrooms are Everywhere Cookeina sulcipes These colorful mushrooms, like many colorful fungus types, can typically be found in tropical and subtropical areas. They are small and tend to grow in clusters. Cookeina sulcipes also plays an important role, as it helps to speed up the decay of dead trees and stumps. After a good rain, colorful caps pop up through the grass. On dead stumps, orange-red clumps overtake the bark. Under the leaves, colorful caps push them aside. On tree trunks, wavy ridges bulge out like shelves. All of these are the fruiting bodies of mushrooms and fungi. Everywhere we walk, mushrooms can be found. Mushrooms thrive in Khaosok everywhere. The collecting of mushrooms and fungi within Khaosok National Park is prohibited. Please leave mushrooms and fungi undisturbed for all to enjoy.
