  • Beyond 500 Rai | 500 Rai Inner Lake Tour, Khao Sok

Explore deeper into the 500 Rai Inner Lake on a private nature journey by raft. Discover rainforest, limestone landscapes and a quieter side of Khao Sok. Beyond Talay Nai A private journey into the 500 Rai Inner Lake, created for travellers who want to spend more time exploring this quieter part of Cheow Lan Lake beyond the usual Coral Cave route. SIGNATURE JOURNEY THE INNER LAKE, DIFFERENTLY There Is More to 500 Rai Than the Coral Cave Route Most visitors know the 500 Rai Inner Lake as part of the trip to Coral Cave. It is a beautiful place, but on the standard tour much of the time here is spent crossing the water on the way to the cave. Beyond 500 Rai was created around a different idea. We leave Coral Cave out of the programme and use that time to experience more of the inner lake itself. The journey is by bamboo raft, with time to see the limestone, forest and quieter parts of 500 Rai that are easily missed on the usual visit. This time, 500 Rai is not simply part of the route. It is the reason we come. PRIVATE DAY JOURNEY Travel with your own local guide and private longtail boat on Cheow Lan Lake, with the 500 Rai experience forming the main part of the day. BAMBOO RAFT EXPERIENCE Spend more time travelling by traditional bamboo raft on the 500 Rai Inner Lake instead of using it only as part of the Coral Cave visit. MORE OF THE INNER LAKE The programme is designed to show more of 500 Rai itself — its water, limestone and surrounding forest — without adding a cave visit. A LITTLE EXPLORATION ON FOOT The experience also includes a short walk during the 500 Rai journey, giving you a chance to leave the raft and see part of the area on foot. THE JOURNEY From Cheow Lan Lake to 500 Rai Reaching the 500 Rai Inner Lake is an experience in itself. The journey combines travel by longtail boat, a forest walk and bamboo raft — three very different parts of the Cheow Lan landscape. Across Cheow Lan Lake Depart from Ratchaprapha Pier by private longtail boat and travel across Cheow Lan Lake towards the 500 Rai area. Walk Into the Inner Lake Continue on foot through the forest to reach the 500 Rai Inner Lake, where the next part of the journey is made by bamboo raft. Beyond 500 Rai This is where our programme differs from the usual visit. We do not continue to Coral Cave. Instead, more of our time is spent exploring the inner lake by bamboo raft. Explore on Foot Part of the experience takes us off the raft for a short walk before returning to continue the journey through 500 Rai. ABOUT THE INNER LAKE What Is the 500 Rai Inner Lake? The 500 Rai Inner Lake, locally known as Talay Nai, is reached from the main body of Cheow Lan Lake by boat and on foot. Once inside, travel on the water is by bamboo raft. For many visitors, 500 Rai is best known as part of the route to Coral Cave. The raft crossing has traditionally been one stage of that excursion rather than the main reason for visiting the inner lake. Beyond 500 Rai looks at the area differently. The programme gives the inner lake a larger part of the day, with Coral Cave deliberately left out. GOOD TO KNOW LOCAL NAME Talay Nai (ทะเลใน) AREA 500 Rai Inner Lake ACCESS Boat, forest walk & bamboo raft LANDSCAPE Freshwater, limestone & rainforest USUAL VISIT Part of the Coral Cave route OUR APPROACH More time exploring 500 Rai itself YOUR DAY ON CHEOW LAN LAKE Beyond 500 Rai — Private Day Tour A full-day private journey from Ratchaprapha Pier into the 500 Rai Inner Lake. The day combines travel by longtail boat, walking and bamboo raft, with lunch on the lake and a photo stop at Khao Sam Kloe on the return journey. Morning- Depart Ratchaprapha Pier Meet your guide at Ratchaprapha Pier and depart by private longtail boat. The journey begins across Cheow Lan Lake, passing limestone formations and forest on the way towards the 500 Rai area. Walk Into 500 Rai Leave the longtail boat and continue on foot through the forest to reach the 500 Rai Inner Lake. At the inner lake, we change from longtail boat to bamboo raft. The Beyond 500 Rai Experience This is the main part of the day. Instead of following the standard Coral Cave programme, we spend our time exploring 500 Rai by bamboo raft, together with a short section on foot. Return to Cheow Lan Lake After the 500 Rai experience, return through the forest to the main lake and rejoin your private longtail boat. Lunch on Cheow Lan Lake Stop for lunch at a floating restaurant/rafthouse before continuing the journey back across the lake. Khao Sam Kloe - The Three Brothers On the return journey, stop at Khao Sam Kloe (Three Brothers) for photos. These three limestone formations are one of the best-known sights on Cheow Lan Lake and a natural final stop before returning to the pier. Afternoon Return to Ratchaprapha Pier Continue across Cheow Lan Lake by private longtail boat and arrive back at Ratchaprapha Pier in the afternoon. BEFORE YOU BOOK A Nature Trip with Some Walking Beyond 500 Rai is not a difficult trekking tour, but reaching the inner lake involves walking through the forest, and there is another short section on foot during the experience. You should be comfortable walking on natural trails, getting on and off a longtail boat and bamboo raft, and spending most of the day outdoors. The trail can be wet or slippery after rain, so suitable footwear is important. TOUR STYLE Private Nature Tour Your guide stays with your group throughout the day. The longtail boat on Cheow Lan Lake is private. BEST FOR Photography & Exploring A good choice if you are more interested in the landscape and the journey through 500 Rai than visiting another cave. NOT IDEAL FOR Guests with Limited Mobility The route involves natural forest trails, uneven ground and getting on and off boats and bamboo rafts. WALKING LEVEL Moderate There is a forest walk to reach the 500 Rai Inner Lake, plus a shorter walk during the Beyond 500 Rai experience. Private Fishing Your own boat and fishing guide, with the day focused on your fishing rather than a fixed sightseeing route. Read the Water Your guide changes fishing areas throughout the day according to water level, weather and fish activity. Local Expert Insight Unlike many freshwater destinations where anglers focus on open water, successful fishing on Cheow Lan Lake often depends on targeting flooded timber, shaded shorelines, submerged points, and protected jungle bays where predator fish naturally ambush their prey. Reading the Water We don’t follow the same fishing route every day. Conditions on Cheow Lan Lake change throughout the day. Your guide chooses where to fish based on water level, wind, light and signs of fish activity. This may mean moving between flooded timber, jungle edges, rocky points and quiet bays as conditions change. 💧 Water Level Changing water levels influence where fish hold, feed, and move throughout the flooded forest. 💨 Wind Direction Wind pushes baitfish, creating feeding opportunities along exposed banks and structure. ☀️ Light Conditions Shade, cloud cover, and the position of the sun affect fish confidence and strike activity. 🌊 Current & Water Movement Small movements of water around points, channels, and submerged timber often concentrate baitfish. 🐟 Fish Behaviour Visible baitfish activity, surface movement, bird activity, and previous strikes help determine where to fish next. Fishing Techniques Topwater Fishing Used around shallow water, flooded timber and jungle edges when fish are active near the surface. Casting Around Structure Accurate casts around standing timber, submerged trees and shoreline cover are an important part of fishing Cheow Lan Lake. Soft Plastics & Hard Lures Your guide may change lure type, size and retrieve depending on the water and fish activity. In Cheow Lan Lake, Siamese Carp are typically found in deeper water near submerged structure and gently sloping shorelines. Success often depends on patience, seasonal conditions, and presenting the right bait in productive areas. Although encounters are less frequent than with some other species, landing a large Siamese Carp is considered one of the highlights of freshwater fishing in Thailand. Preferred Habitat Deep water • Submerged structure • Gentle drop-offs Difficulty ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Typical Size 5–30 kg Common Methods Natural baits • Bottom fishing Clown Knifefish Scientific name: Chitala ornata The Clown Knifefish is one of Thailand's most distinctive freshwater predators, instantly recognised by the row of eye-like spots along its silvery body. They are most active during low-light periods, particularly early morning and late afternoon. Although they are not the primary target for every trip, Clown Knifefish provide exciting action for anglers fishing with both artificial lures and natural baits. Preferred Habitat Flooded timber • Quiet bays • Submerged vegetation Difficulty ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Typical Size 2–8 kg Common Methods Artificial lures • Live bait • Soft plastics Rohu (Labeo rohita) Scientific name: Labeo rohita Rohu is one of the largest carp species found in Cheow Lan Lake and is highly regarded for its powerful, sustained fights once hooked. Caves Diamond Cave A dry cave near Cheow Lan Lake known for its limestone formations and mineral surfaces that reflect light inside the cave. The visit is generally less water-focused than Nam Talu Cave. Cave Name: Diamond Cave Description: Diamond Cave is one of the most beautiful and unique caves in Cheow Lan Lake. Inside, the cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like diamonds when illuminated. The cave also features an underground water source that flows through the cave, reflecting light and adding to the cave's beauty. Diamond Cave is a destination for tourists who want to experience the natural beauty and mystery of caves. Location: GPS Coordinates: 8.9085, 98.5289 (Located within Khao Sok National Park, near Cheow Lan Lake) Size and Depth: Diamond Cave is approximately 500 meters long. The height inside the cave varies, with some sections reaching up to 15 meters, while others are as low as 3-4 meters, requiring visitors to crawl through certain areas. The terrain inside the cave continuously changes, making exploration challenging in some parts due to steep and slippery sections. The width of the cave also varies, with some areas being relatively wide, while others are narrow, requiring visitors to crawl through tight spaces. Exploring Diamond Cave is an exciting and challenging adventure for nature lovers. Interior Features: Diamond Cave is a beautiful and unique cave. Inside, the cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like diamonds when illuminated. When light from a flashlight hits these formations, they sparkle, creating a dazzling effect that gives the cave its name, "Diamond Cave." These formations are the result of mineral deposits that have accumulated over thousands of years, creating the shapes we see today. The beauty of the sparkling stalactites and stalagmites makes Diamond Cave a popular destination for tourists who appreciate the natural beauty of caves. Inside the cave, there are several large chambers connected by passages. Each chamber has its unique and stunning features, with some formations resembling large diamonds or, at times, snowflakes that have fallen. The cave also features an underground water source that flows through the cave, reflecting light and enhancing the cave's beauty. The chambers with high domes have an echoing sound that adds to the cave's mysterious atmosphere. In some parts of the cave, visitors can enjoy a view of the outside world through narrow openings in the cave walls, creating a blend of natural beauty inside and outside the cave. History and Legends: Diamond Cave has a story and legend related to its discovery. One legend tells of a group of villagers who were out foraging in the forest when they discovered a cave that sparkled like diamonds, making the cave famous and leading to its name, "Diamond Cave." Additionally, there is a story that inside the cave, there are diamonds hidden within the stalactites and stalagmites, and those who find these diamonds will be blessed with good fortune and prosperity. However, despite no real diamonds being found in the cave, the beauty of the sparkling formations is like hidden gems within the cave. What to Bring: Visitors planning to explore Diamond Cave should bring a bright flashlight, as the light will enhance the visibility of the sparkling stalactites and stalagmites. Non-slip shoes are essential for safety while exploring the cave. Comfortable clothing that can protect against scratches from the cave's rocky surfaces is also necessary. Additionally, bringing water and a small first aid kit is recommended for comfort and safety during the exploration of this deep and narrow cave. Getting There: The journey to Diamond Cave begins at the Cheow Lan Lake pier, where you'll take a boat ride of about 40 minutes. After disembarking, you need to hike through a forest trail for about 1.5 kilometers. The trail is shaded and not too challenging for most visitors, but appropriate footwear and a flashlight for use inside the cave are recommended. Discover the diverse insects and animals of Khao Sok National Park. Explore Thailand's rich wildlife, from rare species to fascinating jungle creatures. • Kraisorn Viewpoint | Cheow Lan Lake Trek

Trek to Kraisorn Viewpoint above Cheow Lan Lake. Learn about the route, difficulty, terrain and what to expect before planning your private trek. CHEOW LAN LAKE · KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK Kraisorn Viewpoint Leave the lake behind and climb through the limestone landscape for a high view across Cheow Lan Lake and the surrounding rainforest. KRAISORN VIEWPOINT AT A GLANCE A Different View of Cheow Lan Lake Most journeys on Cheow Lan Lake are experienced from water level. Kraisorn changes that perspective. Reached by longtail boat and then on foot, the route climbs through rainforest and steep limestone terrain to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the lake, forest and surrounding karst mountains. The final section is the most demanding part of the walk and requires more care than a typical forest trail. ACCESS Longtail boat + trek ELEVATION Approx. 520 m above sea level EXPERIENCE Rainforest · Limestone climb · Viewpoint THE ROUTE TO THE VIEWPOINT From the Lake into the Limestone Mountains The journey begins by longtail boat before reaching the starting point of the trail. From here, the route continues through tropical forest and gradually gains elevation away from the shoreline. The character of the trail changes as you climb. Forest walking gives way to steeper, rockier terrain, with the final approach requiring careful footing and some scrambling before reaching the viewpoint. FROM THE VIEWPOINT See the Lake from Above From the top, the waterways of Cheow Lan Lake can be seen winding between forest-covered limestone mountains — a perspective that is difficult to understand from the boat below. The view changes with cloud, rain and visibility, so no two visits look exactly the same. On clear days, the wider shape of the surrounding lake and mountain landscape becomes much easier to see. BEFORE YOU DECIDE This Is More Than a Viewpoint Stop Kraisorn is not a roadside viewpoint or a short walk from the boat. Reaching it requires a proper trek followed by a steep final section over natural limestone terrain. You should be comfortable walking uphill in heat and humidity and moving over uneven ground. Rain can make rock and soil considerably more slippery, so conditions on the day matter. ACCESS Sustained walking through forest STEEP FINAL SECTION Rocky limestone terrain FOOTWEAR Proper walking shoes recommended FITNESS Reasonable fitness required WHERE IT IS Deeper into Cheow Lan Lake Ratchaprapha Pier Khao Sam Kler Kraisorn Viewpoint ROUTE Ratchaprapha Pier → Khao Sam Kler → Kraisorn Viewpoint Travel by longtail boat from Ratchaprapha Pier into Cheow Lan Lake before leaving the boat and continuing on foot through the rainforest to Kraisorn Viewpoint. • KHAO SOK FLOWERS & PLANTS | Khao Sok Travel

Khao Sok is rich with fruit and vegetation. It boasts approximately 200 different floral species per hectare including a wide variety of orchids and the World’s largest flower, Rafflesia. FORESTS AND PLANTS Rafflesia in Khao Sok The World’s Largest Flower Rafflesia, known locally as Bua Phut (wild lotus), is orange/red in appearance. It has no roots or leaves of its own; instead it lives parasitically inside the roots of the liana. It takes nine months to grow from the size of a small button to a giant football (some reach 80cm in diameter). The Rafflesia only blooms for a few days a year, usually during January and February. KHAO SOK FLOWERS & PLANTS Khao Sok is rich with fruit and vegetation. It boasts approximately 200 different floral species per hectare including a wide variety of orchids and the World’s largest flower, Rafflesia. Information about Rafflesia (Rafflesia kerrii) in Khao Sok National Park Scientific Name: Rafflesia kerrii Local Name: Dok Bua Phut (Giant Rafflesia) Family: Rafflesiaceae Name Origin: The Rafflesia kerrii was named in honor of Sir Hugh Kerr, a British botanist who discovered this species in Thailand. The genus name "Rafflesia" comes from Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, who was one of the first to discover this flower in Sumatra in 1818. Botanical Characteristics: Rafflesia kerrii is a flowering plant that lacks the usual structures like leaves, stems, or roots. Instead, it consists of a large flower that is red or orange in color, with white mottled patterns on the petal edges. The flower has a diameter of about 50-90 centimeters and can weigh up to 10 kilograms. Rafflesia kerrii is a parasitic plant that relies on nutrients from the vines of the Tetrastigma plant by forming a network of haustoria (parasitic roots) that penetrate the host plant's vascular system. Pollination: Rafflesia kerrii uses a scent similar to rotting flesh to attract flies, which act as pollinators. These flies enter the central part of the flower in search of food, and as they move around inside the flower, they collect pollen from the male flower and transfer it to the female flower. This pollination process is complex and has a low success rate due to the requirement for both male and female flowers to bloom simultaneously. Blooming Season: Rafflesia kerrii typically blooms during the winter season, from November to February, when the weather is cool and humid, ideal for the growth of this flower. However, the flower blooms for only a few days before it starts to wither. Finding a fully bloomed Rafflesia is challenging and requires a bit of luck. Conservation and Biological Importance: Rafflesia kerrii is a plant of high biological significance due to its rarity and risk of extinction. Its dependence on a single host plant species and specific environmental conditions makes its propagation and conservation difficult. Additionally, habitat destruction from deforestation and unsustainable tourism are major factors contributing to the decline in Rafflesia populations. Habitat in Khao Sok National Park: Khao Sok National Park is one of the few places in Thailand where Rafflesia kerrii can be found due to its suitable environment, including high humidity, appropriate temperature, and the abundance of Tetrastigma vines. Rafflesia can usually be found along trekking routes that are at a higher elevation and away from the main tourist areas. Planning and careful travel are necessary to view Rafflesia in bloom. Local Beliefs and Legends: Locally, there is a belief that Rafflesia is a sacred flower inhabited by spirits. Some villagers believe that damaging or disturbing the flower will bring bad luck. This belief helps in the conservation and respect for the natural habitat of this rare flower. Recommended Rafflesia Trekking Tours To experience the marvel of Rafflesia up close, we recommend booking a trekking tour with us. Our tours are led by expert guides with deep knowledge of the local flora and natural environment. The tours are well-prepared and planned to give you the best chance to see Rafflesia in full bloom, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. Your 3D2N Journey Day 1 — Into the Klong Ka Area Travel from Ratchaprapha Pier by private longtail boat across Cheow Lan Lake, passing limestone formations and stopping at Khao Sam Kler along the way. Continue to Klong Ka Raft House for check-in and lunch before heading out again with your guide. Explore the Klong Ka area and visit Prakai Petch Cave, where a walking trail leads through the cave's limestone formations. Return to the raft house in the late afternoon. There is time to settle in, swim or kayak before heading out by boat for an evening safari along the forested edges of the lake. Return to Klong Ka for dinner and your first night on the lake. Day 2 — A Full Day at Klong Ka Start early with a morning boat safari while the lake is still quiet. Your guide will choose the route according to local conditions and recent wildlife activity. Return to Klong Ka for breakfast, followed by a slower part of the morning at the raft house. Kayaks are available for exploring the water around the resort, or you can swim directly from the floating platform. After lunch, continue exploring the Klong Ka area by boat and on foot with your guide. This second day allows more time in the area than the 2D1N programme, without having to return to the pier. Later in the afternoon, return to the raft house for free time on the lake. As the temperature drops, head out again for an evening boat safari before returning for dinner and your second night at Klong Ka. Day 3 — Final Morning on the Lake Head out for one final early-morning boat safari before breakfast. The route follows the quieter edges of the lake around Klong Ka, with your guide watching the forest and shoreline for activity. Return to the raft house for breakfast and some final time by the water before preparing to leave. Check out from Klong Ka and travel back across Cheow Lan Lake by private longtail boat, arriving at Ratchaprapha Pier to complete the three-day journey.
