It’s home to rare species such as the giant parasitic Rafflesia flower, hornbill birds, gibbons and tigers. The park can be explored by elephant-back safari, hiking trail, and raft, canoe or kayak via the Sok river. Far more than just a side trip from the beaches of southern Thailand, the magnificent wilds and majestic mountain lake of Khao Sok National Park are one of Asia's premier natural wonders. Khao Sok stretches over some 646 square kms and is part of a greater protected area that also includes Kaeng Krung and Phang Nga national parks and Khlong Nakha and Khlong Saen wildlife sanctuaries. Spanning over 4,000 square km between them, this is a massive protected area in Thailand, and on a map it looks like an entire province of nothing but lakes, rivers, and jungle. If you're going to visit only one national park in Thailand, Khao Sok is arguably your best choice. Due to its rugged, mountainous and expansive terrain, the park and its surrounds have remained mostly untouched by people, and today Khao Sok teems with plants and wildlife. Wild elephants, dusky languars, leopards, bantung, a range of monkeys, snakes, and over 180 species of bird inhabit the park and surrounding sanctuaries. Equally impressive are Khao Sok's plant species, including massive bamboo trees so thick that anyone standing under them in a down pour will remain dry, and the Rafflesia Kerri Meijer flower, or simply "wild lotus" (bua phut) in Thai, which is one of the largest flowers in the world, reaching a diameter of over 75 cm when fully mature. The best chance to see one in bloom is in November or December, but be prepared for its pungent fragrance that smells something like rotten eggs. With countless hiking trails, waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints, it's worth taking at least a few days to explore the park's western area on foot. However, at least half of the Khao Sok experience is the artificial Chiew Lan Lake — one of Thailand's most scenic bodies of fresh water — which features limestone karst cliffs that rise dramatically from calm, pristine emerald water. Numerous inlets reach far into the land like long, watery fingers, karst cliffs of all sizes rise from the surface of the water, and other worldly caves are found throughout the lake. Indeed, exploring Chiew Lan by boat allows visitors a peak at some of Asia's most stunning natural beauty, a topography that's been compared to the haunting cliffs of China's Guilin and Vietnam's Ha Long Bay. For a truly tranquil experience, spending a night or two at one of the national park's floating rafthouse villages within the lake is a must. Apart from hiking and exploring the lake by boat, many visitors take up the opportunity to do guided bird watching hikes, night safari tours, more extreme overnight camping treks, canoe trips along the Sok River, and elephant trekking, all of which are offered by a plethora of tour companies operating near the park's western gates. Orientation Khao Sok is reached by Rte. 401, which connects Takua Pa in the west to Surat Thani in the east and runs directly south of the entire park, which lies within the borders of Surat Thani province but is far closer to Phang Nga and the western Andaman coast. There are no roads running in to the park itself. The visitor centre, most frequented hiking trails and most of the accessible waterfalls are all located in the park's far western side at the village of Khlong Sok. A small, 1.5 km long access road runs from Rte. 401 directly to the park's front gates, and several guesthouses, resorts and restaurants are found here. The pier for Chiew Lan Lake is located some 50 km east of the visitor centre and majority of guesthouses, near Ratchaprapa Dam, and this area feels like a totally separate destination. To get here it's necessary to first pass through the town of Ban Ta Khun near the park's southeastern point, which is a long trip from the western visitor centre. Although Chiew Lan Lake stretches the entire east to west length of the park and forms most of the northern border, virtually all of Khao Sok's land mass from the visitor centre in the west to Ratchaprapa Dam in the east is covered by rugged mountains and thick forest and is not accessible to visitors. Few if any visitors stay in the Ban Ta Khun area, and the vast majority who visit Chiew Lan Lake and stay at its rafthouses, apart from those who have their own wheels, do so as part of a tour. Aside from the pier, only a small restaurant, a few souvenir shops, and a nearby park are all that's found near Ratchaprapa Dam. Directly in front of the pier there is a small national park booth where visitors must purchase tickets to the park if they haven't already done so, but little if any information is offered here and here and there is no visitor centre on the eastern side of the park. Ban Ta Khun, which is 14 km south of the pier, has some local restaurants and markets but there is currently no tourist infrastructure there. Along the access road leading to the gates and visitor centre at Khao Sok's western end, however, there are plenty of places to stay and eat within walking distance of the park and its trails, and this is where the majority of travellers first arrive. At the park's front gates visitors are required to pay the entrance fee (200B for foreigners or 20B for Thais), which is valid for a period of 24 hours. After entering the park the visitor centre is located a short walk from the gates and is staffed by some very friendly park workers and rangers who speak English well and are happy to answer questions. They also hand out decent information brochures, including a couple of rather vague maps, and can provide info on sights, hiking trails, and accommodation. There are some shared and private rooms available here as well,but few foreigners choose to stay within the park when there are cheaper and more comfortable guesthouses so close by. There is also a small restaurant and shop with limited hours here, but neither seem to see much use — the restaurant looked abandoned when we visited although the ranger insisted it did in fact open. All of the hiking trails in this vicinity begin near the visitor centre and restaurant area, and there are clearly marked signs throughout the trails. Travellers will find just about anything they're looking for along the 1.5 km long access road just outside the park, including accommodation to fit all budgets, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, tour companies, Internet cafes that typically charge 2B per minute, motorbike rental, mini bus services, and at least one ATM located just outside the mini mart next to Herb Restaurant. There are also a few banks and ATMs in Ban Ta Khun. We found cell signal to work relatively well except when hiking several km north of the visitor centre and in some of the further reaches (particularly far northern parts) of Chiew Lan Lake. The national park headquarters can supply basic first aid needs, but anything more serious will require a trip to the hospital at either Ban Ta Khun or Takua Pa. The landmasses started to erode and mudstone and soil fell into the delta. This made both the rivers and the sea shallow and corals and other organism where developed. 280-55 million years ago… More eroded mudstone and soil fell into the delta, and this created the limestone we see today. Fossils from this period tell us that the sea was warm at that time and that Khao Sok was part of a huge coral reef, stretching all the way from China to Borneo. The coral reef was 5 times bigger than today’s “Great Barrier Reef” in Australia. Granite mixed with limestone and other chemicals, and a lot of tin and tungsten was made. 66 millions years ago… Today’s landscape was founded. The limestone was forced upwards when the Indian land-plate crashed into the Eurasian plate. (This happened at the same time as the Himalayan was formed. As the Himalayan Mountain rose, Thailand was moved southeastwards). The ice age never affected Khao Sok much. The ice never reached this far south in Asia, leaving the landscape and the rivers as they where. When the ice melted again, more water than ever floated into the rivers of Khao Sok, making the flora even richer than it was before. That is why the rainforest in Khao Sok is older than the forests of Central America and the Amazons, which were covered with ice. 50,000 – 37,000 years ago… At this time Khao Sok’s mountains belonged to the same mountain ridge as Borneo. Evidence has been found of human habitation on Borneo from this period. It is believed that the same people inhabited Khao Sok as well, since the landscape, with all its caves, fruits, plants and animals, was similar to Borneo’s landscape. In 1800… The first historical evidence of human inhabitants in Khao Sok is from 1800. It was during the rule of Rama II and the conflict between Burma and Thailand. A group of survivors from the west coast were forced to hide away in the forest. They discovered the richness of the forest and quickly learned agriculture, fishing and hunting in order to survive. Quite a lot of the forest was cut down to make room for the growing population. Many people settled down along the road and cut down trees and vegetation to give room for houses and plantations. The area was rich with tin and timber, and the government began to sell properties for logging and minding. It was a big loss for the forest. In 1971… It was discovered that the old delta system was nearly intact and Khao Sok was considered as a possible el-supply for southern Thailand. The area was inspected furthered and people started to realize the wealth of vegetation, animals, limestone mountains and waterfalls. It was decided that all logging and minding should stop, but it took many years before this actually came into effect. In 1976 –1980… A group of communistic students failed to make the changes they wanted in the community, and ended up being considered outlaws. They camped far inside the jungle to avoid the army, which was looking for them. These conflicts made part of the human population in Khao Sok disappear and the rainforest had a chance to breathe. In 1980… Khao Sok was officially established as Thailand’s 22nd national park on the 22nd of December and measured 645 km2. Later the same year, the borders of the national park were changed to make it possible to flood an area inside Khao Sok, to build the Rachabrapha dam. The dam still supplies large parts of Southern Thailand with electricity. A huge rescue operation to save the wildlife took place before the flooding. More than 1300 birds, mammals and reptiles was captured and moved away from the area. Sadly, the operation was aimed more at helping on the human consciousness, than to actually save the wildlife. A majority of the animals died during the relocation. It was a major blow to the wildlife. In 2001… The national park was extended from 645 km2 to 739 km2. HISTORY OF HUMAN MIGRATION AND SETTLEMENT IN KHAO SOK: FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES TO THE 18 TH CENTURY Khao Sok Human History The Malay peninsula and southern Thailand is among the most complex migration route on earth. Some of the sites that have had some archeological work done have reveal many layers of human use and occupation, from so many different periods of time and different cultures. FIndings of pre historic cave paintings and burial sites, it presents us with even more mysteries. No one really knows for certain whether the area that is now Khao Sok National Park was occupied by humans in the pre-historic past or not. It is rugged land remote from the well travelled coast, but is also amazingly rich in wild fruits and meat and contains countless caves of human habitation. Also Stone age people may well have occupied these areas until quite recently. The Khao Sok area was, in all likelihood, home to the nomadic forest dwelling tribes similar to the Mani, the last bands of hunter-gathered forest people still surviving in the Trang mountains and near the border of Thailand and Malaysia. At the oldest know human habitation site in South East Asia, the Niah caves in northern Borneo, archeologist have dated human skulls back 37,000 years and found evidence of 50,000 years old habitation. The similarity of extensive cave systems and rich rainforest, and the fact that a land bridge connected Khao Sok and Borneo during the last great Ice Age make prehistoric occupation of this area more than mere conjecture. The first historical accounts of people residing in the Khao Sok Area date back to the reign of King Rama 2 in the later part of the 18th century. When the Burmese attacked the coastal towns of Takuapa, takua Toong, and Thalang (Phuket) the survivors fled inland through the vast forest, crossing rivers and mountains, in fear of their lives. INSECTS & ANIMALS Tapir of Khao Sok This image was captured by a wildlife camera trap set up by patrol officers at Khao Sok National Park. The camera captured a tapir near a water source and food area for wildlife in the region. What animal has a face like a pig, feet like a rhino, a nose like an elephant’s trunk, and a short tail like a bear? An animal with such a unique appearance can only be the ‘tapir.’ The tapir, or Malayan tapir, scientifically known as Tapirus indicus, is a large herbivorous mammal. It typically measures about 2 meters in length, stands 1 meter tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 150-300 kilograms. Its short coat ranges in color from brown to nearly black, except for the Malayan tapir, which has a distinctive white band around its midsection, and the mountain tapir, which has a longer coat. All tapir species have oval-shaped ears with rounded tips and a white edge, a drooping, plump rear, and a short, thick tail. The front legs have four toes, and the back legs have three, allowing them to walk on mud or soft ground. Baby tapirs have striped or spotted fur for camouflage. Females have a single pair of teats. Tapirs are solitary or pair-living animals that forage in dense, moist forests, often near water sources. They use their long, trunk-like noses to help smell and grasp leaves from bushes for food, and they can eat certain toxic plants. Tapirs enjoy wallowing in water or mud, are nocturnal, and have poor eyesight, relying on their trunk to smell their way around.
