About Rafflesia Rafflesia is a parasitic plant with no leaves or roots on its own. As they mature, they swell, breaking through the bark, to the size of a football. They then burst open revealing the massive flower, which can be up to 80 cm. in diameter and is ocra, yellow, chesnut and white in colour. Flies pollinate Bua Phut, attracted by the sweet, slicky smell. A female flower is polinated oly by a male flower, and chances are reduced, not only by its rarity, but also because it only flowers for 3-4 days, then it shrivels and dies. The color ranges from red to orange, with the inside being darker than the outside. The color gradually fades towards the tip of the stem. Protected since 1974, it is important habitat for large mammals, primates, hornbills and other forest wildlife, and it has also become an important landscape for long-term ecological research. A journey across Cheow Lan Lake toward the remote rainforest landscape associated with Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary. A Protected Landscape Before Cheow Lan Lake Khlong Saeng was legally designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1974. Historical records describe an original area of 772,500 rai. Three later withdrawals connected with the Ratchaprapha/Chiew Larn hydroelectric development removed a combined 50,472 rai, leaving 722,068 rai. This chronology matters because it reverses a common visitor assumption: Khlong Saeng was not created around Cheow Lan Lake. The protected forest came first; the reservoir later transformed part of its lower landscape.
