- The mantis, or praying mantis | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS The mantis, or praying mantis belongs to the order Mantodea. It is easily recognizable by its elongated body, triangular head, and prominent, raptorial forelegs that are adapted for capturing and holding prey. These insects are highly skilled predators, often known for their stealthy hunting techniques. Their large, compound eyes can rotate nearly 180 degrees, giving them a wide field of vision, which is crucial for detecting prey and potential threats. In terms of behavior, mantises are ambush predators. They remain motionless and camouflaged within their environment, waiting for an unsuspecting insect or small animal to come close before striking quickly with their spiked forelegs to secure their meal. Their diet mainly consists of other insects, but larger species have been known to capture small vertebrates. In Khao Sok National Park, mantises are commonly found in various habitats ranging from the dense rainforests to more open areas. The rich biodiversity of the park provides an ideal environment for these insects, offering plenty of prey and ample vegetation for camouflage. Mantis species in Khao Sok are part of the park's complex ecosystem, contributing to the balance of insect populations and serving as both predator and prey within the food chain. Previous Next
- Wild Elephants at Cheow Lan Lake | Khao Sok Travel
Khao Sok Image Collection Wild Elephants at Cheow Lan Lake A rare wildlife sighting on Cheow Lan Lake, where elephants emerge near the forest edge as travelers observe quietly from a longtail boat. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed on Cheow Lan Lake, which is exactly what makes an encounter like this so special. When elephants appear near the forest edge, the best approach is to remain quiet, keep a respectful distance and allow the animals to move naturally without disturbance. Boat-based wildlife watching offers the possibility of seeing the forest from a different perspective, particularly during quieter hours of the day. Every sighting depends on season, weather and animal movement, so patience is an essential part of the experience.
- The Asian Forest Scorpion | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS The Asian Forest Scorpion A species of scorpion commonly found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Thailand. These scorpions are known for their large size, with adults typically reaching up to 10-12 cm in length. Their bodies are robust and dark, usually black or dark brown, which helps them blend into the forest floor where they often hide under logs, rocks, or leaf litter during the day. Despite their intimidating appearance, Asian Forest Scorpions are not highly venomous. Their sting is painful but usually not dangerous to humans, similar to a bee sting. They rely more on their strong pincers (pedipalps) to capture and subdue prey, which includes insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. These scorpions are nocturnal and come out at night to hunt. They are solitary creatures, and their diet consists mainly of insects and small invertebrates. In the wild, they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations. Asian Forest Scorpions are sometimes kept as exotic pets, but they require specific environmental conditions that mimic their natural habitat, such as high humidity and plenty of hiding spots. While they are not typically aggressive, they will defend themselves if threatened. In Khao Sok National Park, visitors might encounter these fascinating creatures during night hikes, offering a glimpse into the nocturnal world of the rainforest. Previous Next

Caves Fish Cave Located along the route towards Khao Sok, Fish Cave is a small cave and stream area known for the freshwater fish living around it. It offers a short nature stop before reaching the main Khao Sok area. About Fish Cave Fish Cave, also known as Wat Tham Pla, is a small cave-temple and stream area located along the route towards Khao Sok. Unlike Coral Cave, Diamond Cave and Nam Talu Cave, it is not part of a journey across Cheow Lan Lake. The area is known for the freshwater fish living in the stream and pools around the limestone setting. It is usually visited as a short nature and cultural stop rather than as a major cave expedition. A Different Cave Experience Fish Cave offers a very different experience from the caves around Cheow Lan Lake. There is no longtail boat journey across the reservoir. Instead, the attraction combines a limestone setting, temple surroundings and freshwater fish in an easily accessible stop on the way towards Khao Sok.
- Forests and Plants of Khao Sok National Park | Explore Thailand's Rich Biodiversity
FORESTS AND PLANT SPECIES Chicken Star Mushroom / Glow-in-the-Dark Mushroom Chicken Star Mushroom, also known as the Glow-in-the-Dark Mushroom, emits light in the dark. This rare phenomenon occurs in select areas, including Khao Sok National Park, thriving in its humid, biodiverse environment. General Characteristics Scientific Name: Mycena chlorophos . This species is one of the bioluminescent mushrooms, which naturally produce light due to the presence of luciferin. When luciferin reacts with oxygen in the environment, it produces a faint greenish glow. Size and Shape: Bioluminescent mushrooms are typically small, with cap sizes around 1-2 centimeters. They usually grow in clusters, with slender, elongated stems. Bioluminescence: These mushrooms emit a soft green glow in the dark, which attracts insects and small animals that help in the dispersal of spores. Habitat Bioluminescent mushrooms are commonly found in humid, evergreen forests. They often grow on decaying wood or in soil rich in decomposing organic matter. In Thailand, these glow-in-the-dark mushrooms can be found in certain areas of Khao Sok National Park, which is known for its rich biodiversity. Ecological Role Bioluminescent mushrooms play a vital role as decomposers in the ecosystem. They help break down organic material in the forest, facilitating the recycling of nutrients in the soil. Additionally, the light they emit may attract insects and small animals, aiding in the dispersion of their spores. Significance and Conservation The glow-in-the-dark mushroom is of significant interest to both tourists and scientists due to its rarity and unique bioluminescent property. Conservation of the humid evergreen forests where these mushrooms thrive is crucial to maintaining Thailand's rich biodiversity. Research and observations conducted in Khao Sok National Park provide valuable insights into the role and importance of bioluminescent mushrooms within the ecosystem. Previous Next

- Cheow Lan Lake Floating Resorts Map | Khao Sok Travel Maps
A 3D overview of floating resorts and Ratchaprapha Pier on Cheow Lan Lake. Explore detailed 3D maps of Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake by Khao Sok Travel. < Back Cheow Lan Lake Floating Resorts Map A 3D overview of floating resorts and Ratchaprapha Pier on Cheow Lan Lake. Understanding the Floating Resorts of Cheow Lan Lake The floating resorts of Cheow Lan Lake are not arranged along a single shoreline. They sit in different bays and branches of the reservoir, separated by forested hills, limestone cliffs and stretches of open water. This map brings their locations together in one view, with Ratchaprapha Pier shown as the main point of arrival for visitors travelling onto the lake. Among the properties labelled are Keeree Tara, Panvaree, Panvaree The Greenery, The Laguna, Sai Chon, Praiwan, Klong Ka, Phupha Waree and Keeree Warin. Each name represents a different starting point for an overnight experience. Some resorts are reached relatively early in the boat journey; others require travelling farther through the lake’s branching waterways. That difference can shape both your arrival day and the activities available during your stay. When comparing accommodation, it is worth looking beyond the room photographs. A resort’s position affects the boat transfer, the surrounding scenery and how naturally a visit to places such as Khao Sam Kler or Pakarang Cave might fit into a journey. The best choice depends on the experience you want, not simply which property looks closest on a flat map. Use this illustration alongside our Khao Sok regional map or plan your journey page to understand how the lake stay connects with the rest of your trip. Resort labels are intended for orientation; exact positions and operating routes should be confirmed before travel. Previous Next

- Pakarang Cave — Trek & Bamboo Raft Route | Khao Sok Travel Maps
An illustrated route combining jungle walking and bamboo rafting toward Pakarang Cave. Explore detailed 3D maps of Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake by Khao Sok Travel. < Back Pakarang Cave — Trek & Bamboo Raft Route An illustrated route combining jungle walking and bamboo rafting toward Pakarang Cave. Pakarang Cave: A Journey Beyond the Main Lake A visit to Pakarang Cave (Coral Cave) is memorable partly because reaching it involves several different environments. Visitors travel by longtail boat across Cheow Lan Lake , continue through the forest on foot and use a bamboo raft to cross an inner stretch of water before approaching the cave. This illustrated route helps explain that sequence. What appears to be one point on a conventional map is actually a combination of lake travel, walking and a short water crossing. The transition from the broad reservoir to a quieter inner-lake setting is a distinctive part of the experience, especially for travellers who enjoy understanding how the landscape fits together. Pakarang Cave is also connected to the wider main-lake terrain map , while the regional overview shows where the lake sits in relation to the rainforest and road access. When arranging an itinerary, it is worth allowing time for the journey itself rather than thinking of the cave as a quick stop. The distances and minutes printed on the original artwork describe the illustrated route and have not been independently verified as current operating times. Walking conditions, raft arrangements and access may change with weather and water levels. Previous Next
- Khlong Ka Peat Swamp Trek | Khao Sok Travel
< Back Khlong Ka Peat Swamp Trek A forest trek through the Khlong Ka area near Cheow Lan Lake, exploring a quieter landscape of dense vegetation, streams and wet forest terrain. About Khlong Ka Khlong Ka offers a quieter forest experience in the Cheow Lan Lake area, with a landscape shaped by water, dense vegetation and wet forest conditions. It provides a different kind of trek from the viewpoints and cave routes found elsewhere around the lake. What the Trek Is Like The experience focuses on exploring the forest environment at a slower pace. Depending on recent rainfall and water levels, the route may include damp or muddy ground, streams and sections of uneven natural terrain. Rather than being centred on a single viewpoint or cave, the interest here is the forest itself — its vegetation, sounds and changing conditions. Conditions & Access Conditions vary throughout the year, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The route and access may therefore change depending on weather, water levels and current National Park guidance. Who Is This Trek For? Khlong Ka is suited to travellers who are more interested in rainforest ecology and quieter natural surroundings than reaching a major viewpoint or completing a more demanding cave adventure.

- Responsible Wildlife Watching in Khlong Saeng | Visitor Guide
How to watch wildlife responsibly in Khlong Saeng: distance, quiet observation, no feeding, no chasing, sensitive-location protection and realistic expectations. CHEOW LAN LAKE → KHLONG SAENG → responsible-wildlife-watching KHLONG SAENG · RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL responsible-wildlife-watching Responsible wildlife watching in Khlong Saeng means giving animals space, keeping noise low, never feeding or chasing wildlife, following sanctuary rules and accepting that sightings are never guaranteed. Responsible wildlife watching means observing quietly, keeping distance and allowing wild animals to behave naturally. Distance Is Behavioural, Not Just Numerical A fixed number of metres cannot describe every encounter. Species, terrain and circumstances differ. The practical rule is that wildlife should retain space, an escape route and normal behaviour. If an animal becomes alert, retreats or changes direction because of the boat, pressure should be reduced. Noise Changes the Experience Loud voices, repeated engine acceleration and sudden movement can cause wildlife to disappear before visitors even see it. Quiet travel benefits both animals and observers. Never Feed or Bait Feeding changes natural behaviour, can create dependency and may draw wildlife toward people or boats. A genuine encounter occurs because the animal chose to use that habitat, not because food was offered. Never Chase a Sighting When an animal moves away, extending a sighting by repeatedly following it can become harassment. The responsible choice may be to stop, remain distant or leave. Rare Species Need Extra Care Precise recent locations of rare carnivores, nests or sensitive wildlife should not be publicly mapped. Conservation information can be educational without becoming a location guide. No Guarantees Wildlife guarantees create unrealistic expectations and can incentivise intrusive behaviour. Skilled guiding improves interpretation, timing and search strategy; it cannot control wild animals. KEY FACTS GOOD TO KNOW Keep space | Stay quiet | Never feed | Never bait | Never chase | Follow current sanctuary rules | Do not publish sensitive locations | Sightings are never guaranteed Local regulations and sanctuary instructions always take priority over general wildlife-watching advice. Frequently Asked Questions Can boats approach elephants closely? They should remain far enough away that elephants have space, an escape route and continue natural behaviour, while also following any current official rules. Is feeding wildlife allowed? Wild animals should never be fed or baited for observation. Why shouldn't rare-animal locations be shared? Precise locations can increase disturbance and other risks. Educational information does not require publishing sensitive coordinates. What if an animal walks away? Allow it to leave. Do not pursue simply to prolong a sighting. Can guides guarantee wildlife? No. Expertise can improve how and where observers search, but free-ranging wildlife remains unpredictable. - Khlong Saeng Wildlife | Elephants, Tapirs, Gaur & Forest Species
A research-based guide to Khlong Saeng wildlife, including elephants, tapirs, gaur, clouded leopards, hornbills and what visitors can realistically expect. CHEOW LAN LAKE → KHLONG SAENG → Wildlife of Khlong Saeng KHLONG SAENG · WILDLIFE Wildlife of Khlong Saeng Scientific surveys have documented a diverse large-mammal community in Khlong Saeng, including Asian elephant, Malayan tapir, gaur, serow, sambar deer, leopard, mainland clouded leopard and Asian golden cat. The wider Khlong Saeng–Khao Sok forest complex is also important for hornbills, primates and other rainforest wildlife. A wild Asian elephant sighting during a Cheow Lan Lake wildlife journey. Wildlife encounters are natural and never guaranteed. Large Mammals Documented by Field Research A 1997–1999 study used twelve one-kilometre transects across seven locations plus camera traps at 54 locations, totalling 1,026 trap-nights. The survey documented 14 species of large mammals and identified Khlong Saeng and Khang Ya as important wildlife habitat. Recorded species included elephant, tapir, gaur, serow, sambar deer, leopard, clouded leopard and golden cat. Rare Cats: Evidence, Not Expectations Camera-trap work has documented rare felids in the sanctuary and wider forest complex. A later spatial capture-recapture study recorded at least 27 mainland clouded leopards during 5,242 trap-days in its study area. These findings show the conservation value of connected forest; they should never be marketed as animals tourists are likely to see. Asian Tapir Malayan or Asian tapir has a long research history in Khlong Saeng. A 2026 study using camera-trap bycatch data in the wider Khlong Saeng–Khao Sok Forest Complex analysed 91 detections and identified a minimum of 43 individuals in its dataset. The study illustrates the importance of this forest complex for a secretive and threatened mammal, but its estimates apply to the study design and area, not to tourist sighting probability. Hornbills and Forest Birds Research assessing hornbill conservation in Thailand identified the Khlong Saeng–Khao Sok complex as a hornbill hotspot. Approximately 96% of the complex was predicted as potentially suitable hornbill habitat in that study, and the landscape supports several hornbill species. Great Argus research in Khlong Saeng also demonstrated how reservoir-edge disturbance can influence forest bird abundance. What Visitors May Actually Notice A wildlife journey is often built from signs as much as sightings: gibbon calls travelling across forested slopes, hornbills crossing above the canopy, macaques or langurs near forest edges, tracks on exposed banks, movement in fruiting trees, or a brief appearance of a large mammal at the water. These observations vary daily. No Guaranteed Species Khlong Saeng is a functioning ecosystem. A scientifically documented species may be nocturnal, secretive, naturally rare or deep in forest inaccessible to visitors. Ethical guiding distinguishes between 'recorded in the landscape' and 'realistically observable on a trip.' KEY FACTS GOOD TO KNOW Research methods include transects, tracks, dung/pellet surveys and camera traps | Large mammals scientifically documented | Wider forest complex recognised for hornbill habitat | Rare-species records should not be used as sighting promises Wildlife records cover different years, methods and study areas. They should not be combined into a single current population estimate. Frequently Asked Questions What animals live in Khlong Saeng? Research has documented elephants, Malayan tapirs, gaur, serow, sambar deer, several wild cat species and numerous smaller mammals, while the wider forest complex is also important for hornbills and primates. Will I see an elephant? Possibly, but never reliably. Elephant presence is documented; visibility on any specific trip depends entirely on free-ranging animal movement and conditions. Can tourists see clouded leopards? Clouded leopards are scientifically documented in the wider forest complex but are extremely elusive. Their presence is a conservation fact, not a realistic sighting promise. Are there hornbills? Yes. Research identifies the Khlong Saeng–Khao Sok complex as an important hornbill landscape, and several hornbill species occur in the region. Why do wildlife lists differ between websites? Sources often mix historical records, regional records and direct observations. This guide prioritises documented research and clearly separates evidence from visitor expectations. The Main Lake: A Landscape Shaped by Water and Stone One of the most striking things about Cheow Lan Lake is the way water enters former valleys between steep forested ridges. From a high viewpoint, the reservoir seems to have many separate arms, islands and sheltered inlets. From a boat, those same features become an ever-changing sequence of narrow passages, open bays and limestone walls. This cutaway-style terrain illustration is intended to make that relationship easier to see. It places the main lake within the surrounding mountains and identifies familiar landmarks such as Khao Sam Kler and Pakarang Cave . The image is conceptual rather than a measured topographic model, so it should be read as an introduction to the landscape, not as a source of precise elevation or distance. Understanding the shape of the reservoir can improve a trip plan. A visit to one attraction may require only a short stop from the boat, while another involves walking, a bamboo raft or additional travel into a separate branch. Our Khao Sok map and travel guide explains how these routes connect to Ratchaprapha Pier . Area figures printed on the artwork, including forest and water totals in rai, have not been independently verified. They should not be quoted as confirmed measurements. Previous Next

- Best Time for Khlong Saeng Wildlife | Seasons & Sightings
When is the best time for Khlong Saeng wildlife? Understand rain, water levels, fruiting, time of day and why no month can guarantee animal sightings. CHEOW LAN LAKE → KHLONG SAENG → Best Time for Wildlife in Khlong Saeng KHLONG SAENG · SEASONS Best Time for Wildlife in Khlong Saeng Wildlife lives in Khlong Saeng year-round. Observation changes with rain, water level, food availability, temperature and disturbance, so there is no scientifically defensible 'best month' that guarantees elephants or other species. Early morning mist on Cheow Lan Lake. Wildlife activity changes with weather, food, water levels and natural animal movement. Wildlife Is Present Year-Round Khlong Saeng is permanent habitat, not a seasonal wildlife attraction. The animals do not arrive for a tourist season; instead, their location and detectability change within the landscape. Drier Conditions Lower or changing water levels can expose banks and make some tracks or signs easier to notice. Boat conditions may be calmer on some days, but dry-season conditions do not guarantee that large mammals will use visible shorelines. Wetter Conditions Rain intensifies streams, vegetation and cloud around the mountains. It can reduce visibility or alter boat plans, while also changing food, water and animal movement. Wet weather is part of the rainforest rather than simply a failed wildlife day. Food Can Matter More Than the Calendar Fruiting and other local food resources can concentrate birds and primates in particular places. These events vary spatially and from year to year, which is why recent field knowledge can be more useful than a generic monthly chart. Time of Day Quieter and cooler periods can be useful for observation, and early starts are commonly valued by wildlife guides. However, species differ and no time of day guarantees a large-mammal sighting. The Better Question to Ask Instead of asking 'Which month guarantees wildlife?', ask 'What are current conditions, and can the itinerary give us enough quiet observation time?' That produces a more realistic and responsible plan. KEY FACTS GOOD TO KNOW Wildlife habitat: year-round | Visibility: variable | Key influences: rain, water, food, disturbance, species behaviour | Guarantee: none | Planning principle: maximise quiet observation time Seasonal descriptions are guidance, not predictions of specific species encounters. Frequently Asked Questions What is the best month to see elephants? There is no month that can reliably guarantee wild elephants. Their movement responds to changing habitat conditions rather than a tourism calendar. Is the rainy season bad for wildlife? Not necessarily. Rain can reduce visibility and affect routes, but it also changes water, vegetation, food and animal activity. Is early morning best? Early, quieter periods can be valuable, but different species have different activity patterns and sightings remain unpredictable. Does low water help? Exposed banks can sometimes make tracks or shoreline activity easier to notice, but water level alone does not predict wildlife presence. What should I ask before booking? Ask about current conditions, the amount of observation time, guide experience and how flexible the route can be within current regulations. - Oriental Whipsnake a rare yellow colour morph | Khao Sok Travel
INSECTS & ANIMALS Oriental Whipsnake a rare yellow colour morph common and fascinating snake species found in the lush forests of Khao Sok National Park. This slender, green snake is well-camouflaged among the leaves and branches of trees and shrubs, making it difficult to spot. The Oriental Whipsnake is known for its elongated body, which can reach lengths of up to 2 meters, and its distinctive pointed snout. This species is arboreal, meaning it spends most of its time in trees, where it hunts small prey such as lizards, frogs, and birds. The Oriental Whipsnake has excellent vision, which it uses to detect movement and strike at its prey with precision. Despite its slender appearance, it is a skilled hunter. The snake's green coloration allows it to blend seamlessly with the foliage, providing it with both protection from predators and an advantage when ambushing prey. Its movement is smooth and graceful, often seen gliding through the branches as it navigates the dense vegetation of the rainforest. In Khao Sok National Park, visitors may encounter the Oriental Whipsnake while walking through the forest trails, especially during the day when the snake is active. Although it is mildly venomous, the Oriental Whipsnake is not dangerous to humans. Its venom is primarily used to subdue its prey, and bites to humans are rare and usually only occur if the snake feels threatened. The Oriental Whipsnake is a remarkable example of the diverse reptile life that thrives in the rich ecosystem of Khao Sok National Park. Its presence adds to the park's reputation as a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Previous Next
- Wild Elephants in Khlong Saeng | Cheow Lan Wildlife Guide
Learn about wild Asian elephants in Khlong Saeng, evidence of their presence, shoreline observation and how to watch elephants responsibly on Cheow Lan Lake. CHEOW LAN LAKE → KHLONG SAENG → Asian Elephants in Khlong Saeng KHLONG SAENG · ASIAN ELEPHANT Asian Elephants in Khlong Saeng Asian elephants are documented in Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary and remain present today, but they range freely across a large forest landscape. Shoreline sightings can occur, yet no route, guide or season can guarantee an encounter. Wild Asian elephants photographed in the protected rainforest landscape around Cheow Lan Lake. Scientific and Official Evidence Elephants were recorded in large-mammal surveys of Khlong Saeng after construction of Ratchaprapha Dam. Current DNP activity also confirms continuing elephant presence: in May 2026, the Department of National Parks reported veterinary monitoring of an injured wild male elephant inside Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary. Why Shorelines Matter to Observers From a boat, visitors can only observe a narrow interface between water and forest. When elephants happen to use exposed banks or vegetation near the reservoir, they may become visible. Most of the time, however, an elephant can remain completely hidden within dense forest even when it is relatively close. Signs Before Sightings Experienced guides may notice tracks, broken vegetation, dung, feeding signs or movement patterns that indicate recent elephant activity. These signs improve interpretation but still do not predict exactly where an elephant will appear. How to Watch Responsibly Keep distance, reduce noise, avoid blocking an animal's direction of travel, never feed or call animals, and never pursue an elephant that retreats into forest. If behaviour changes because of the boat, the observation is already too intrusive. Why We Never Guarantee Elephants Guaranteeing a wild elephant sighting would misrepresent the ecosystem and can encourage poor behaviour such as chasing animals. A responsible wildlife trip maximises observation opportunity while accepting that nature decides the result. What Counts as a Good Elephant Encounter A distant elephant feeding calmly for several minutes can be a better encounter than a close animal disturbed by boats. Binoculars and telephoto lenses allow visitors to appreciate behaviour without reducing the animal's space. KEY FACTS GOOD TO KNOW Species: Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) | Status in Khlong Saeng: scientifically documented and recently confirmed by DNP activity | Tourist sighting: possible, never guaranteed | Best practice: distance, silence, no feeding, no pursuit Do not ask guides or boat captains to approach elephants closely. Wild elephants can be dangerous and disturbance can alter natural behaviour. Frequently Asked Questions Are there really wild elephants at Khlong Saeng? Yes. Elephants are documented in scientific surveys and DNP reports confirm their continuing presence in the sanctuary. Where can elephants be seen? They may sometimes appear near forest edges or shorelines, but publishing or chasing specific sensitive locations is neither reliable nor responsible. What time are elephants most active? Activity varies with weather, food, disturbance and individual behaviour. Quieter periods can improve observation conditions, but there is no guaranteed time. Can a guide guarantee an elephant sighting? No responsible guide can guarantee a free-ranging wild elephant. How close should a boat go? There is no universal distance that overrides animal behaviour and local rules. The boat should remain far enough away that the elephant continues behaving naturally and has an unobstructed escape route. During routine patrols by park rangers, a significant number of these mushrooms were observed, thriving due to the park's humid evergreen forest environment, which is conducive to their growth. They are typically found on decaying logs or in soil rich with decomposing leaf litter. Scientific Name: Cookeina sulcipes (Bk.) Kuntze Family: Sarcoscyphaceae Morphological Characteristics Cap: The cap is cup- or cone-shaped, with a diameter of 10-35 mm and a depth of 10-20 mm. The color ranges from red to orange, with the inside being darker than the outside. The color gradually fades towards the tip of the stem. The surface is smooth, with short hairs surrounding the edge of the cap, arranged in about 2-3 rows. Stem: The stem is cylindrical, 15-38 mm in length and 1-3 mm in diameter, and is entirely white. The stem is attached centrally to the cap and is smooth, with hairs covering the entire stem. Habitat This mushroom grows on decaying wood, either in groups or individually. Ecological Role The Champagne Cup Mushroom acts as a decomposer in the ecosystem, playing a crucial role in the recycling of nutrients in the soil. A broad 3D view of Khao Sok National Park, its rainforest and Cheow Lan Lake. Explore detailed 3D maps of Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake by Khao Sok Travel. < Back Khao Sok National Park — Forest & Lake Overview A broad 3D view of Khao Sok National Park, its rainforest and Cheow Lan Lake. The Forest and the Lake: Two Sides of Khao Sok Khao Sok National Park is often imagined as one continuous visitor destination, yet travelling through it involves two quite different experiences. Around Khao Sok Village, visitors explore rainforest trails, rivers and the national park headquarters area. Farther east, Cheow Lan Lake opens into a broad network of waterways surrounded by forested mountains. This overview brings those landscapes together. From above, the water appears to weave through the hills rather than forming a simple oval lake. That shape is important: it influences how boats travel, where floating accommodation can be located and why some destinations require more time than their straight-line distance suggests. The main gateway to the lake is Ratchaprapha Pier . Reaching the pier from the village involves a separate road journey; there is no visitor road cutting directly through the protected forest between the two gateways. Once at the pier, the route continues by boat. Our regional rainforest-to-lake map shows this connection in more detail. The boundary shown on this artwork is illustrative and should not be interpreted as an official national-park boundary or land survey. Its purpose is to communicate the relationship between forest, terrain and lake. Previous Next

Stay Between the Cliffs and the River The Cliff & River Jungle Resort, locally known as Phupha & Lamthan Resort, sits away from the busier centre of Khao Sok, surrounded by forest, limestone mountains and the Sok River. The resort is spread across a large natural setting, with wooden bungalows positioned through gardens and along the hillside. Its location is the main reason to stay here: mornings are quiet, the surrounding cliffs feel close, and during the wetter months low cloud and mist often settle around the mountains. It is a good choice for travellers who prefer more space and natural surroundings rather than staying directly in Khao Sok village. Dramatic Limestone Setting One of the resort’s strongest features is its setting directly below the forest-covered limestone mountains of Khao Sok. River & Jungle Surroundings The lower part of the property reaches the river, while the rooms and gardens extend up the hillside.
